Presenting... The PPM Player Awards! This past year has been a grand one for the gaming landscape, and so PPM opted to launch an exclusive awards show to commemorate those titles which innovated and stylized this unique form of entertainment. Few of these decisions were unanimous, and rest assured we've added runners-up in each category to see who just missed the cut. Remember this is just the opinion of your Review Crew at PPM! Write in with your own picks!

SNES GAME OF THE YEAR:
Star Fox

award1

For Super NES    Developed by Nintendo
We've chosen to award our SNES Best-Of trophy Star Fox, of course! This fantastic 3-D space shooter and revolutionary S-FX title delighted and inspired the entire industry.

Runners-Up: Super SF2 Turbo, Pocky & Rocky, Secret of Mana, Zombies Ate My Neighbors

SEGA GENESIS GAME OF THE YEAR:
Rocket Knight Adventures

award1

For SEGA Genesis    Developed by Konami
For its arcade-like charm, stellar play control, and excellent take on action-platformers, Rocket Knight beats out the field. Strap on your jetpack and thrash piggy henchmen.

Runners-Up: Gunstar Heroes, Shining Force, Mortal Kombat, SF2 SCE

SEGA CD GAME OF THE YEAR:
Sonic CD

award1

For SEGA CD    Developed by SEGA
1 Super-Powered Sonic + Advanced CD Technology = A Shining Star! Sonic CD simply overshadowed otherwise commendable games on SEGA's CD add-on.

Runners-Up: Silpheed, Final Fight CD, Robo Aleste, The Terminator

PORTABLE GAME OF THE YEAR:
Link's Awakening

award1

For Game Boy    Developed by Nintendo
Saving the world alongside your tunic-clad hero is as fun as ever on Game Boy. Zelda on-the-go proves portables can perform the same wonders as home systems.

Runners-Up: Kid Dracula (GB), Mortal Kombat (GG), Sonic Chaos (GG), FF Legend III (GB)

BEST GAMING MASCOT:
Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog)

award1

For SEGA Systems    Developed by SEGA
1993 was a busy year for the mascot industry. SEGA's iconic Sonic was an absolute trendsetter throughout video gaming, and for this feat he goes home with the gold.

Runners-Up: Sparkster (Rocket Knight Adv.), Bubsy (Bubsy), Super Mario (Super Mario All-Stars), Cool Spot (Cool Spot)

BEST SOUNDTRACK:
Final Fantasy V

award1

For Super NES    Developed by Square
FFV presents the greatest game music this year, bar-none. It decimated this year's CD games apart from perhaps Sonic CD. Look for it on US shores around summertime.

Runners-Up: Star Fox (SNES), Dracula-X (PC Duo), Sonic CD (SEGA CD), Secret of Mana (SNES)

BEST COOPERATIVE GAME:
Pocky & Rocky

award1

For Super NES    Developed by Natsume
Grab a buddy and jump into Pocky & Rocky for an unforgettable ride through feudal Japan in this addicting co-op shooter. Our runners-up are commendable too!

Runners-Up: Goof Troop (SNES), Zombies (SNES), Secret of Mana (SNES), Dashin' Desperados (GEN)

MOST CONTROVERSIAL GAME:
Mortal Kombat

award1

For Arcade    Developed by Acclaim
A close match, but we've given this to MK. Thanks to some crudely-animated blood and guts courtesy of fatalities, games now face a censorship battle in Washington!

Runners-Up: Night Trap (SEGA CD), Lethal Enforcers (VARIOUS), Splatterhouse (VARIOUS), Super Scope (SNES)

CONSOLE OF THE YEAR:
Super Nintendo

award1

Developed by Nintendo
Players lived through a two-horse race in 1993 with the Turbo and NES fading away. SEGA put up a heck of a fight by delivering a far greater number of games this year. Nevertheless, SNES narrowly wins by proving game quality excels above quantity.

Runners-Up: SEGA GENESIS, SEGA CD

OVERALL GAME OF THE YEAR:
Sonic CD

award1

For SEGA CD    Developed by SEGA
Surprise! A nail-biter finish, but PPM chooses Sonic CD as 1993's Best Game. This title presented brilliant gameplay, a killer CD soundtrack, a gorgeous opening animation, and a plethora of levels (and time periods!) to explore. A round of applause for Sonic as well as all of our runners-up. We can't wait to see the future of games!

Runners-Up: Secret of Mana (SNES), Star Fox (SNES), Rocket Knight (GEN), Lords of Thunder (TURBO)
