Castlevania 64
logo
Developed By: Konami
Release Date: TBD 1998
Reader, beware! You're in for a scare! Konami's new vampire extravaganza marks a dramatic departure from the franchise we've adored since its very first premier on the NES long ago. Castlevania 64 will be the testing grounds for the next phase of Dracula killers, evident by its fully three-dimensional appearance totally unlike SOTN or any prior release. Set in the Industrial Revolution of the nineteenth century, your quest will be to (What else?) find and defeat the batty menace himself: Dracula. Our theory is this time period was chosen to allow for more modern technology to be utilized, like sophisticated weapons and traps.

Begin by choosing from one of four characters, then get going into the wilderness. Depending on your choice, the route to completing the adventure will shift and varied scenes will play out. Konami has also introduced a day and night cycle based on a realtime clock, with a far greater number of enemies rising from the shadows at nighttime. Expect a ton of puzzle solving along the way, in addition to the horror-themed action Castlevania fans have grown accustomed to. Instead of gaining mana from candles and hearts, items will be acquired only from fallen foes or discovered hidden in the world. We nervously await this new entry, one exclusive to Nintendo 64, when it makes its debut later this year.

Tomba!
logo
Developed By: Whoopee Camp
Release Date: Summer 1998
Created by ex-Capcom veteran programmers and the legendary Makaimura Fujiwara, Whoopee Camp (Choice name, lads. -Jet) is developing a highly original sort of side-scrolling platform game for the PlayStation. Tomba! is a lighthearted romp that beautifully meshes the best of 2-D and 3-D graphics into a slick and colorful package, not unlike our featured title Klonoa. Its featured star is a pink-haired caveman who, er, battles an evil race of walking pigs. Think that's weird? Even less conventional is this disc's combat system. Eliminate enemies by jumping straight on top of them, then somersaulting them into oblivion. It's a lethal pounce, certainly a far worse fate than Super Mario's boot.

Our first hands-on trial at Tomba! further revealed a surprising number of RPG elements. The titular character can visit towns like Dwarf Village and engage with the town residents, a tonal shift that switches the perspective to an overhead view. In typical gameplay areas, this disc will take advantage of the PlayStation's 32-bit hardware to add new sorts of polygonal environments and a sense of depth. 3-D ledges and obstacles, for example, add some innovation to a genre many games players shrug off as last-gen fodder. Whoopee's creation is out now in Japan, and is due out this July in North America.

Iggy's Reckin' Balls
logo
Developed By: Iguana Entertainment
Release Date: Summer 1998
Acclaim Studios and Iguana Entertainment have revealed Iggy's Reckin' Balls, a quirky Nintendo 64 cart that melds together elements from the racing and platform genres into an exceptionally cuddly package. It is a disquieting sensation to see a more kid-centric game from a studio known for more moody titles like Turok, alas here we are with a competitive multiplayer game practically begging for top billing over at Blockbuster. The main idea in Iggy's is to guide a series of animated spheres atop long stretches of platforms.

When controlling a sphere, you can bounce, roll, or use a grappling hook to stay balanced and slowly rise on up to the next level. "It's sort of like Mario Kart 64 with springs", according to Acclaim. Each spheroid is unique in its appearance and ability, including a Ninja and Space Alien. The folks behind this ball-tastic cart promise no shortage of modes, including a head-to-head Battle Mode, a Time Trial, and a Team Combo mode. The simplicity of the concept plus upwards of 100 levels means we may have a winner here. Look forward to more news on Iggy's upon its planned release this summer.
