Zelda 64
logo
Developed By: Nintendo EAD
Release Date: TBD 1998
RPG aficionados are buzzing over the impending release of The Legend of Zelda 64. So far, very little official information is available from Nintendo, but a few facts have already leaked out. This intel suggests this installment will push the Zelda series to the next generation. Shigeru Miyamoto, famed creator of Zelda and the genius behind Super Mario 64, is heavily involved with development. Like SM64 before it, Zelda 64 will shed its traditional 2-D perspective in favor of the varied 3-D environments and camera angles. Soon, games players will be able to explore all inches of Hyrule's vast terrain, discovering secrets, weapons, potions, and much more.

Expect swift combat centered around sword fighting, utilizing familiar items such as exploding bombs and arrows. Link now appears older and more mature, but some previews show off a much younger hero who may be Link's son. Plot details are fuzzy at this point, but we anticipate a rescue of Princess Zelda from Ganon. Most notable is the clear-cut intention of the Big N to utilize their 64DD disk drive system as the format to expand on Zelda. It will initially arrive on a standard cart, but, by all accounts, a gigantic expansion exclusive to 64DD is on the horizon shortly after.

Crash Bandicoot 2
logo
Developed By: Naughty Dog
Release Date: November 1997
Crash Bandicoot is back! The sequel, Crash 2, arrives just in time for the holiday season. Following directly after the first game, a defeated Dr. Cortex schemes anew from an underground lair. Cortex suddenly decides he wants to save the day, claiming he needs Crash to gather crystals to avert some disaster. Sounds fishy given his history, we think! This wild plot is accompanied by several notable gameplay upgrades. Though stages generally guide you along a linear path, Crash can now leap to various platforms and even take to the skies! Our favorite tangerine champion now boasts fresh abilities, think belly flops alongside power jumps, and can even pilot an array of vehicles including a speedy Jet Ski.

First glimpses of gameplay appear promising, particularly thanks to smoother visuals coupled with better control responsiveness. The visuals pop with more detailed polygons and richer colors. Check out Crash's reflection on icy surfaces! Instead of simply progressing normally, you now navigate Warp Rooms, selecting stages like in classic games. To give an idea of the new features, an added jetpack stage will suddenly introduce a whole new six-direction control scheme - good luck! For anyone who enjoyed the original, this is essential.

Developed By: Sega
Release Date: November 1997
Sonic the Hedgehog spin-dashes back onto the scene in an all-new type of racing game: Sonic R. Rather than presenting a sprawling world to explore, Sega delivers a quick thrill ride, encompassing a blend of speed, competition, and a hearty dose of exciting action. Zoom through colorful landscapes inspired by the series' namesake with four distinct realms built for breakneck racing. But don't simply floor it; a single mistake might send you tumbling into water or fighting to regain ground, sacrificing valuable time.

Beyond the mad dash to the finish line, keep an eye out for emeralds hidden throughout the courses. Expect five varied game modes and four distinct courses, with rumors of a hidden fifth stage locked away as a secret. Does Sonic R deliver a thrilling experience in its rush of velocity and chaotic three-dimensional racing? Or could rivals simply outpace it? The answer awaits release day!
