preview1    preview1 Super Mario 64

For ULTRA 64
Developer: Nintendo
Release: May 1996
Making its grand entrance onto the world stage at the Shoshinkai Exhibition is none other than the next generation of platform adventures. Super Mario 64 firmly breaks off from the series' usual 2-D boundaries by bringing forth a free-form game like no other: A true virtual reality painstakingly crafted by Shigeru Miyamoto and his team at Nintendo. Mario himself strides into the future with a fully polygon-rendered body, accompanied by graceful animations and a wide assortment of techniques.

The analog thumbstick of the NU64 is used to control the star plumber, either by pressing it slightly to initiate cautious forward movement or moving it as far as it will go to propel Mario ahead in full sprint. Do anything from arial flips and helicopter spins, to ledge-grabs and butt-slams! The beginning of the game will have you gaze upon the princess' gigantic castle and its wide-open fields. You can take Mario on a tour of the serene castleground, climb up trees or swim in waterways. Once ready to journey onward, cross the drawbridge and get started. It's up to you, and that aspect will redefine games.

preview1    preview1 Kirby Bowl 64

For ULTRA 64
Developer: HAL
Release: May 1996
Attendees at Shoshinkai likewise had access to Kirby Bowl 64 - which, albeit impressive in its own right, was unsurprisingly overshadowed by the stunning SM64. Developed by HAL Studios, this entry in the puffball's lineage appears inspired by Dream Course for SNES with far more varied play mechanics. Players guide Kirby down a fully 3-D, checkerboard-patterned slope to collect stars and leap above obstacles, utilizing speed and momentum to explore the rolling arenas.

The game style morphs in competitive four-player mode to an all-out race to knock your opponents out of play. Once again, the Ultra 64's ingenious controller takes center stage, as the thumbstick allows precise directions thanks to its dual analog and digital inputs. As KB64 indicates, Nintendo is putting a real emphasis on focused movements as well as rapid input response.

preview1    preview1 Pilotwings 64

For ULTRA 64
Developer: Nintendo
Release: Summer 1996
Get ready to take to the skies in this exciting sequel to Pilotwings on Super Nintendo, an often overlooked flight sim with rockin' Mode 7 scaling effects. This high-flying title will feature a variety of sky-based simulators rendered with true 3-D graphics. Nintendo partnered with Silicon Graphics experts at Paradigm Simulation to assist with the technical production, calling upon that company's professional expertise with forming realistic physics engines.

Players will experience flight from all facets imaginable, from stunt hang gliding to skydiving and beyond. Pilotwings 64 showcases the graphical fidelity of the NU64 in a huge way. Early game footage emphasizes lifelike scenery generated on the fly as well as famous landmarks from across the country. Our sources speak to a potential weaponized combat mode as well.
