preview1    preview8 Sony PlayStation

For PS-X
Developer: Various
Release: 1994 JPN
Sony Computer Entertainment has officially unveiled their premier entry into the next wave of gaming consoles: The Sony PlayStation. This 32-Bit machine was revealed during a special Japanese media conference, in which Sony extensively discussed the specifications of their new device, showed off the final design of the console, and presented a look at some games currently in-development. The system, as shown in our screenshots above, is a simple gray rectangle, roughly the size of a Model 2 Genesis, with easily accessible Power-On, Reset, and Disc Open buttons. One dominant feature is the circular disc tray cover, which will open like a discman as opposed to using a motorized tray. Its controller is a curious spin on the SNES "dog bone" design, featuring four face buttons, four directional keys, Start, Select, and two L and R shoulder keys on top.

Sony has yet to show off the system in-use, but they fortunately did prepare a demo reel with some of the upcoming PS-X games. The presenters opened with an impressive, fully realized 3-D rendering of a T-Rex: Frightening as heck and ultra-realistic. Games straight from Sony include a 3-D shooter called ORA-194, an RPG named Ark, and a driving game, Polypoly. Namco announced continued development of ports of Ridge Racer and Cyber Sled for the PlayStation, each of which looked identical to their arcade counterparts. All in all, Sony declared upwards of 82 games are in the works, from a number of high-profile licensees. No official release date or fixed pricing was announced, although an autumn launch is highly speculated. As for us stateside folks, the new Sony Computer Entertainment of America will provide more info soon.

preview2    preview8 Sega Saturn

For SATURN
Developer: Various
Release: 1994 JPN
Sega, once the undisputed underdog in the neverending 16-Bit wars, has grown to a household name. Images have surfaced showing off their brand-new, upcoming Saturn games console in all of its glory: A shiny silver box complete with a top-loading disc tray as well as a cartridge slot. The Japanese developer is sure to dazzle us with the final product, at least judging from their oath to stuff state-of-the-art arcade technology inside of this thing. The Saturn will house two 32-Bit RISC processors and will reportedly be able to generate instant texture mapping, flat shading, and plenty of other special effects. Image scrolling is also a big one, allowing game devs to create realistic 3-D ecosystems more effectively. Saturn's dual disc-and-cart combination does leave us tilting our heads. Will titles be released on both formats, or is there more to this story?

We've known for a long time that the landmark launch titles for the Saturn will be Virtua Fighter, the incredible 3-D polygonal fighting game, and Daytona, the uber-popular 3-D racer. Other games in-development for this system include a stellar shooter called Panzer Dragoon, a next-generation follow-up to Shinobi III, and an action-platformer named Clockwork Knight. Truth be told, we're pumped for Virtua Fighter above the fray. On that note, Sega producer Hiroshi Suziki issued a statement noting Saturn versions will maintain, "the movements and skills of the characters," with a "reduction in the number of polygons." We hate to hear that, but no arcade conversion is impeccable, after all. Early screenshots (shown below) are shaping up to be rock solid. We expect more news, and a possible '94 release date, this fall.
