F-Zero X
logo
Developed By: Nintendo EAD
Release Date: Summer 1998
Seven years following the release of the Super NES smash hit F-Zero, Nintendo is finally returning to the garage to deliver a long-awaited follow-up futuristic racer on the N64. Initially shown in its playable form at Space World 1997, F-Zero X (then called F-Zero 64) immediately impressed crowds with its blazing fast speed and inventive track designs, once more solidifying Shigeru Miyamoto's 3-D gaming chops. Four circuits are planned for the final cart, each containing multiple courses with entirely new layouts for players to race through. These tracks are filled with obstacles of all sorts, ranging from ramps and hairpin turns to corkscrews and tunnels galore. Upwards of 30 unique crafts will be featured, each rated on an attribute scale based on Body, Boost, and Grip.

Amazingly, X can handle all 30 racers on-screen simultaneously without a hint of slowdown. According to Nintendo, this cart will run at a smooth 60 frames-per-second as the racers zip around going over 1,000 km/h. If this holds true in the launch version, F-Zero X will be nothing short of astounding to witness. As the cherry on top, Nintendo has confirmed Rumble Pak compatibility and a future expansion planned for the 64DD add-on device with a full track and craft editor. We anticipate the base game will launch in Japan this Summer with a stateside release shortly after.

Mega Man Neo
logo
Developed By: Capcom
Release Date: Summer 1998
Capcom has declared it is ready to make the leap into third-dimensional gaming by modernizing its longest-running series. Mega Man Neo is an upcoming PlayStation-exclusive adventure that totally reimagines this legendary franchise. Moving beyond the traditional side-scroller fare of yester-year, this entry unfolds across lush, polygonal environments packed with villages, storefronts, and motion-captured cinematic scenes. To be certain, this is far more than a simple visual upgrade. It's a total overhaul. Locales will be fully explorable in this lively adventure, where a younger, helmetless iteration of the Blue Bomber can interact with townsfolk and purchase energy drinks. Action and combat retain the overall intense feel of the original titles in a 3-D setting, meaning players will still be hunting down bosses to unlock new abilities and weapons.

Mega Man will be charged with all varieties of tasks and missions from stealing secret treasures to eliminating venomous serpents in a dark cavern. Boss fights are enormous and captivating as well, leaving us totally hooked and ready to play on. Judging by the tech demo, much care has been taken to avoid the pitfalls of games like Bomberman 64 by offering an intuitive camera system in conjunction with transparency effects to ensure walls never block your view. Time will tell if this reinvention of a classic formula will perform (and review) better than the aforementioned example, but the signs are promising.

Quest 64
logo
Developed By: Imagineer
Release Date: Summer 1998
Nintendo fans have been practically starving for a new, exclusive role-playing game, having been offered ne'er a crumb in the near-two-year lifespan of the Nintendo 64. Players may have caught a glimpse of a curious 3-D fantasy game some time ago, but it was not until this most recent Space World exposition that the curtains were finally pulled back on Imagineer's Quest 64. Yes, at long last an RPG is on the horizon that looks to capitalize on the power of N64. The cart will star a young, apprentice magician named Jack as he explores the kingdoms of Celtland to recover a powerful tomb. Early footage shows Jack navigating dense wooden areas, vast deserts, and sprawling fortresses. These polygonal areas will be easily explorable with no shortage of characters to converse with and learn from.

Encounter an enemy in the wilderness and the game will seamlessly transition to combat. Battle sequences are styled similarly to Chrono Trigger's Active Time Battle system, in which the camera shifts perspective and your warrior is locked down to a fixed area. Monsters in all sizes, shapes, and degrees of toothiness may be thwarted by use of elemental magic: Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire. Strategically utilizing "Spirit Taming" to command these forces will be vital in overcoming the challenge posed by the diverse beasts of Celtland. More shall be revealed when Quest 64 launches in the U.S. this Summer.
