preview1    preview1 Quake

For DOS & Windows
Developer: id Software
Release: June 1996
Brace yourself for the next evolution in 3-D shooters. From idSoftware, creators behind the genre-defining Doom, comes an insane-looking successor called Quake. Players will still have the freedom to roam around in a three-dimensional space shooting loads of enemies with big, honkin' guns, but you have never seen a massacre quite like this. As this issue goes to print, PC owners can download a free "shareware" demonstration with a multi-player deathmatch mode enabled. This is already compatible with network cards and serial cable, meaning networked PCs can play together with up to 8 players at once!

Either pair off into teams or go full-on mayhem with a free-for-all. Quake features very realistic movement compared to its closest rivals, and sports modernized graphics with polygonal beings instead of flat sprites. The new engine developed specifically for this release brightens maps with some advanced pre-rendering lighting techniques. The full game is due out in June for DOS and Windows, and we anticipate PS-X and Saturn versions to follow shortly thereafter.

preview1    preview1 Final Fantasy 7

For PS-X
Developer: Squaresoft
Release: December 1996 JPN
It turns out the rumors were true! Despite Nintendo's assurances, Square is packing up and moving their priorities over to Sony to publish titles for PlayStation. Final Fantasy 7, a highly anticipated project originally planned for release on the Ultra 64, will be the first of such titles transitioning to greener pastures. This seventh entry is a dramatic tonal departure from the detailed spritework seen on Super NES. It will harness the polygon-drawing powers of the PS-X to present a rejuvenated battle engine complete with 3-D characters and lifelike interactions unlike any RPG seen before.

Cloud, the sword-wielding explorer seen in the screenshots, is expected to lead a massive story-driven experience with intricate plot-points and assorted endings. All we know for sure at this early juncture is the setting will partially unfold within the SGI-rendered city of Midgar, and our heroes will be tasked with some gigantic problem to unravel. We look forward to the Japanese release of FF 7 in December, and even more so for a localized version sometime next year. preview1    preview1 Policenauts

For SATURN
Developer: Funcom
Release: Summer 1996 JPN
Konami's cyberpunk thriller Snatcher won universal acclaim when it was first released for Sega-CD in '94. Policenauts is a similarly styled adventure game developed by the same team that brought you one of the all-time greats. In the near future, a proficient defense force made up of earth's finest protectors is established to guard a delicate space colony. One of these enforcers falls adrift into the emptiness of space, only to mysteriously emerge seemingly un-aged after decades. Just as was the case with Snatcher, you will travel from location to location interacting with objects, speaking with various characters, and, occasionally, donning your pistol to stop the bad guys. The storyline appears fairly linear without any divergent paths, however both the graphics and sound seem superb. Policenauts is out now in Japan on 3DO and PlayStation, with an upcoming Saturn release expected to have improved video fidelity and light gun support.

preview1    preview1 Wild Arms

For PS-X
Developer: Media Vision
Release: TBD 1996
The age of 32-Bit RPGs is upon us! Brought to you by the creative wizards behind Rapid Reload and the Japan-only 3-D shooter Crime Crackers is an exciting role-player called Wild Arms. Early previews demonstrate drop-dead gorgeous combat sequences featuring high-quality polygonal characters. Battles utilize an orthodox turn-based system involving the traditional metrics of hit points, items, and special abilities. World traversal plays out on a 2-D, top-down view. Some elements of puzzle-solving are present in the overworld to overcome obstacles, like pushing heavy blocks or demolishing boulders to breach passageways. Wild Arms revolves around the stories of three central figures - Adventurer Rudy Ragnite, spell-user Cecilia Ardelheit, and treasure hunter Zack Van Brace. We will be on the lookout for more news on this RPG as we look ahead to the second half of PlayStation's first full year in the US market.
