Working Designs published for American audiences an all-new action-RPG exclusive to the Sega Saturn. In Shining Wisdom, you control a lowly warrior named Mars tasked with the duties of a sworn protector for the mighty Kingdom of Odegan. Mars holds the blood of the brave knight Sir Jiles within him, and this warrior soul now drives our hero to stop the evil Pazart from unleashing a Dark Titan upon the land. Despite the somewhat archaic story, Shining Wisdom breaks the mold with vastly disparate gameplay from any prior game in the Shining series. As opposed to the tactical and strategic elements fans have grown accustomed to, Wisdom draws heavy inspiration from Zelda with action-oriented combat in a sprawling overworld with puzzle-based dungeons.

Now, it cannot be argued that Wisdom neglects to meaningfully separate itself from Zelda. Unlike Link who always carries his trusty sword, Mars treats his sword as an equipped item. Therefore, you will quickly grow familiar with the inventory system, as conscientious and perpetual equipment management will be key to your survival. One button for your weapon and another for expendable items. The remaining four face keys initiate the all-important dash move, which is a requirement considering Mars strides along at a snail's pace. Towns and caverns can feel a bit stale for those familiar with this game's formula, although the variety in weapon and magic types do make combat far more interesting than it would be otherwise. Projectile tools such as the boomerang-like Boxing Glove and wearable Sliding Shoes for narrow crevices are great additions.

JET'S REMARK: Working Designs expertly localized this Japanese RPG and luckily managed to leave out any horribly dated references! Amusing dialogue amongst the townsfolk is, thankfully, intact as expected.

Review Station Last Stop
Shining Wisdom exhibits imaginative weaponry and catchy tunes, yet unintuitive play controls, last-gen graphics, and mediocre combat hindered by poor design choices keep this title from reaching the genuine greatness of the Shining Force games.
