Wonders Version 2.2: Postal

Minimum System Requirements: Windows 95 or Mac OS, Pentium 90 (Or 68040 Processor for Mac), 16MB RAM, 2x CD-ROM Drive

Fancy yourself a gool ol' murderous rampage, leaving behind burned and bloodied corpses in your wake? Virtually, of course. In the case of Postal from Ripcord Games, pure shooting violence is the primary gimmick. Players control a paranoid, gun-toting psychopath known as Postal Dude. The premise simplistically involves going "Postal," a jibe at disgruntled post office employees who go nuts and commit mayhem. That is, Postal Dude will be armed to the teeth with an arsenal of death tools ready to dispatch anything with a pulse within all kinds of danger-filled environments.

While the game very deliberately was designed to draw flak from concerned parent groups, and controversy itself hardly merits a solid game (See Night Trap), the gameplay is strong. Developers utilized hand-painted backgrounds and two-dimensional scenery to create a distinctive, surreal look. Blast enemies with one of twelve weapons, including a Napalm Launcher and Molotov cocktails. Fans of first-person shooters will be familiar with the control scheme, like other isometric action games with somewhat unwieldy aiming and occasional obstructions. Also to note, Postal is networkable via TCP/IPO or IPX connections.
