preview1    preview1 The Legend of Zelda

For ULTRA 64
Developer: Nintendo
Release: Winter 1996/7
One sequel all games players are dying to catch a glimpse of is Zelda 64. Nintendo premiered abstract video footage of the upcoming action-adventure at the Shoshinkai Show. This ten-second clip revealed an impressive animation sequence that featured a fully 3-D rendered Link sparring with an enemy knight clad in stunning reflective armor. Development is extremely early, and it was emphasized that the videotape will bear little resemblance to the final product, but this early peek does show off some eye-popping features of the NU64, nonetheless.

Bringing the exceptional realm of Hyrule to Ultra 64 will be no easy task, but Mr. Miyamoto is confident the series will be right at home. In his words, "I think Zelda should have been in 3-D right from the beginning." Zelda 64 will be prepared for release on the Bulky Drive expansion, to allow adequate room for the immense size of this title. Plans are in motion for a launch in tandem with the upgrade. It will doubtlessly generate as much, if not more, excitement than A Link to the Past did.

preview1    preview1 Super Mario Kart R

For ULTRA 64
Developer: Nintendo
Release: TBD 1996
Alongside the groundbreaking Super Mario 64, Mr. Yamauchi dedicated much of his time at Shoshinkai speaking to the grand potential for Super Mario Kart R, the follow-up to the classic Super NES racing game. R is said to utilize high-tech graphics and special effects which will take complete advantage of the Ultra 64. Carrying on the tradition of its predecessor, this go-kart racer will bring the Super Mario cast to life in a competitive racing environment friendly to all ages and skill levels.

The biggest and best innovation with R is the fantastic four-player vs. mode. Seeing as the Ultra 64 includes four controller ports right out of the box, up to four players can race at once! In such a match, each player receives a window in the corner of the screen, much like Hollywood Squares. Tracks will also be displayed at a wonderous 640x480 resolution with up to 32K colors displayed. Kart's pancake-like levels will be updated with all-new varied designs, including valleys and hills. Wowza!

preview1    preview1 Star Fox 64

For ULTRA 64

Release: TBD 1996
Super NES owners that may feel burned for the cancellation of Star Fox 2 can now look on to the future with this 64-Bit evolution of the FX Chip original. Nintendo EAD is developing Star Fox 64, a tremendous improvement on a formula that earned astounding success. It shall feature the same type of predetermined, track-based gameplay as before, now with texture-mapped polygons and ultra smooth scrolling to breathe new life into this face-paced shooter. Fox McCloud and the rest of the SF animal gang will take to the skies in their sleek Arwing spacecraft, dodging explosions and blasting apart oncoming foes. No release date is yet shown for this shoot-'em-up.

preview1    preview1 Super Mario RPG

For SNES
Developer: Square
Release: May 1996
A key component of understanding Nintendo's strategy is knowing they don't play by anyone's rules except their own. Case in point: Square is nearing completion on an incredible RPG for Super NES starring Super Mario characters. Once a fabled legend, it is now confirmed that a role-playing game with Mario, Princess Toadstool, and King Koopa is coming very soon. The isometric world is beautifully painted with lavishly hued backdrops and characters. Areas range from garden meadows to dank sewers, as well as the Koopa Castle itself. SM RPG will have an enormous memory size, too, with a cart potentially as large as 128 MEGs! Keep an eye out for a complete review as soon as this gem touches down in stores.
