Crash Bandicoot
logo
Developed By: Naughty Dog
Release Date: September 1996
Small studio Naughty Dog is hard at work creating an exclusive platformer made entirely in 3-D. Alongside producers at Universal Interactive Studios, the developers previously known for Way of the Warrior imagined a next-generation action game unlike anything seen yet on the Sony PlayStation. Their project stars an Australian rodent with a knack for destruction called Crash Bandicoot. This island adventure will have you face down a mad scientist determined to control the minds of animals to do his bidding - Better stop him before Crash's girlfriend Tawna is subjected to the brainwashing!

The title features over 30 levels of gameplay in all with fast-moving action, ultra quick puzzle solving, and a variety of themed areas. Crash will use a quick spin attack to rid the screen of monsters and destroy crates to uncover bonus fruits - collect enough of them to gain special powers like temporary invincibility! Word has it Sony is so impressed with the Vegemite-eating Aussie that they have pre-emptively decided to make him the official mascot for the PlayStation (See ya, Hermie Hopperhead!).

Sonic X-Treme
logo
Developed By: Sega Technical Institute
Release Date: Autumn 1996
Sega is preparing to officially announce their plans for an all-new Sonic the Hedgehog entry for the Saturn (What on earth took so long?). In fact, there are two games in the works. One is a pseudo-3D action game with graphics resembling Kirby's Dream Course, headed for a dual Genesis-Saturn release this holiday season. The other, more secretive project is the real deal. We're talking Sega's main challenge to the impending dominance of Super Mario 64. This 32-Bit adventure is rumored to seriously push the processing capabilities of the Saturn by taking total advantage of the console's complex chipset design.

Sega Technical Institute, the team behind lovely legends like Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, provided an early sneak peek into their work on the next mainline release. The STI crew has given it the working title Sonic X-Treme as opposed to Sonic 4 as they've deemed it an undeniable departure from any previous platformer. Be sure to expect familiar gameplay with the series' trademark blazing speed, gravity defying stunts, and radical stage layouts, but now bumped to the next level with true 3-D environments made from texture-mapped polygons and modeled character sprites that seem to pop out from the screen.

Turok
logo
Developed By: Iguana Entertainment
Release Date: Autumn 1996
Acclaim allowed us a delightful preview of their upcoming first-person adventure called Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. Originally one of the first titles unveiled for the Nintendo 64, Turok has been built from the ground-up to utilize the advanced hardware to its fullest extent. Your mission in this action-filled journey is to stop a tyrannical cyborg called The Campaigner from using the Chronoscepter, a time traveling gizmo, to break the space-time continuum. This task takes you through a mysterious dimension called the Lost Valley which is bursting from the seams with dinosaurs, aliens, robots, and other strange pests.

Turok's Lost Valley is a stunning 3-D world, as one may expect from a Nintendo 64 cart. Battling fearsome foes with your trusty Tek-Bow and tomahawk takes place in a landscape shrouded with fog - likely to hide any polygonal pop-ins, though it does add an element of tenseness to the previewed sequences. One major highlight is the flexible and non-linear nature of the Lost Valley. Warps can take you to various locales to play out the chapters in any order you choose, and the objectives are said to vary greatly from one to the next. Get ready to vanquish velociraptors when Turok hits the scene this fall.
