Pocket Monsters
For GAME BOY Developer: Game Freak Release: JPN February 1996 / US TBD
As portable game fans must know, the Game Boy is surely on its last legs - at least judging by its sparse release schedule. The same is true overseas, where Japanese game shops have allegedly began dumping their stock of game paks into bargain bins. It was, then, a welcome treat to see Nintendo allocate space to new GB offerings at the Shoshinkai Show. Innovative ones, at that! Far and away the most intriguing is a quirky, creative RPG that allows players to train up monsters, then battle or transfer them from your Game Boy to a friend's, via the link cable. The idea is to collect as many rare and mighty species as you can, all stored in the comfort of your pocket. Thus, the name Pocket Monsters. Two separate versions have released in Japan, called Red and Green, with different types of monsters available in each. No news yet about an American translation. |
Skeleton Warriors
For SATURN Developer: Neversoft Entertainment Release: April 1996
Developed by little-known Woodland Hills developer Neversoft, Skeleton Warriors is preparing for its imminent launch onto Sega Saturn. Players searching for a 2-D side-scroller in the vein of Castlevania need look no further than this equally frightening platformer. Your character uses a sword to strike fast at his foes, and like Simon Belmont's whip may be powered-up to inflict greater damage. The most glaring feature here is the brilliant animation and creative design of the rendered enemies that range from undead hounds to tarantulas and plenty more tremendous monsters. Some levels will also include fully 3-D segments to break-up the action. This will be the publisher Playmates Interactive's first venture onto a next-generation system - following successes with Genesis and Super NES last year. |
Kirby Super Deluxe
For SNES Developer: HAL Release: JPN Spring 1996 / US TBD
The loveable pink puffball is rapidly turning into a significant resource for Nintendo. His standing will only increase in stature with the arrival of Kirby Super Deluxe on Super NES. This cart is a combination of six mini-sized games in one and is all set for a Japanese launch this spring. The title hero once more dons his persuasive mimic of a vacuum cleaner as he embarks in an assortment of side-scrolling adventures from "Revenge of Meta-Knight" to the "Cave Project". In the main stories, he will be able to accumulate dozens of abilities by absorbing the unique powers of his foes. A buddy can help out as well in two-player simultaneous play and can likewise capture baddies. Several sub-games will add extra fun to the mix, too, reminiscent of the strength contest in Sonic Blast Man. |
